I like to go to the store with Mom to buy food and other things for the house.

Mom makes a list and asks Dad if there is anything else she needs to add.

Then she asks me if there is anything I want.

I’m ready.

I hand her my shopping list.

It has everything I need.

I find a big ring with beads that slide all around it.

What’s this? I ask Mom.

“It’s a teething ring,” Mom says. “You chewed on it when you were a baby.”

I will play with it again, I say, when I grow smaller.

And I place it back in the toy pile. For later.

I sit in the back of the cart. And sort food items.

Mom hands me a box of crackers. I pack it in the corner.

She hands me a box of corn flakes. I pack it in the same corner.

Mom hands me bananas. Those go on top.

We go to check out.

We did it! I squeal as we leave the store. We did it together!

It is my turn to take home the class pet, Jerry the Bug.

I hold him. And play with him. And talk to him. And sing to him.

I make sure he has a warm bed for the night.

I come home with a note from school today. It says I am a good cook. (On some days, we get to make our own treats!)

Mom likes the note.

“It’s your turn to cook tonight,” she laughs.

I spill my drink on the floor.

Towel, I say.

Mom hands me a paper towel. And I clean up my mess.

“Thank you,” Mom says.

My diapers—or papers, as I call them—have a stripe along the front. Each bag comes with four colors of stripes. Blue. Green. Red. And orange.

I like orange best.

I want to make sure Mom uses the orange-striped diapers first. So I dump all the diapers out of the bag. Put them in a box. With all the orange ones on top.

“I guess you will sort your clothes drawer one day, too,” Mom laughs.
