I point to Mom’s ring.

What’s that?
I ask.

“It’s a diamond,” Mom says.

I look at the shape of it.

No, it’s not, I correct her. It’s a circle.

My shows are on silver disks. They play and replay. They loop. And go on and on.

They do not stop. There are no breaks.

Unless Mom turns on the tube instead.

Then my shows stop. Just when the story gets good. And some other show comes on. One that wants to sell me something.

Where did my show go?

Mom, I yell. It’s not coming on!

Dad fills a balloon with water. We walk it out to the deck.

I stand in a pool of water.

“You are in a pool of ice cream,” the coach says.

The other kids and I scoop the ice cream. I scoop vanilla. Another girl scoops orange sherbet. The little boy scoops chocolate.

“Parents pick up your kids,” the coach says.

Mom holds my tummy as I lie on top of the water.

“Now kick!” the coach says. “Scoop and kick.”

I start splashing Mom with my feet. And scoop more ice cream with my hands.

Time for milk shake, I think.

Too soon the class is done. And I’m hungry.

“Let’s go home for dessert,” Mom says.

Good idea
, I say.
