My costume is not ready. So I wear my orange and black sweater to the trick-or-treat fest downtown.
A lady looks at me and smiles.
“Are you a witch?” she asks.
I put my hands on my hips and glare at her.
No, I say.
And I thought only kids called each other names, I think to myself.

Wet stuff pours down my face. Toward my lips.
Juice comes out of my nose, I fret.
“You have a cold,” Mom says. And hands me a tissue.
I blow my nose. But it still feels stuffed.

Snow covers fall leaves like sugar on gum drops. In flavors of cherry, orange, lemon, lime, cinnamon and spearmint.

I draw an oval. With wings.
My bumble bee, I say to Mom.
Mom’s eyes grow wide.
“Oh, my,” Mom says. “I used to draw bumble bees just like that. On a chalk board. The size of my dad’s thumb.”

I point to the east. The sun comes up over there, I say.
“Very good!” Mom says.
I point to the west. The sun goes down over there, I say.
“You sure are smart,” Mom says.
She is surprised I know so much.
I point to the sky above my head. And it just wiggles around up there, I finish.
