“Stop barking at the world,” she says. And shoos the small dog into the house.

I hide from Sleep. I crawl deep under the bed sheets so that Sleep can not find me.

Mom and I play colors. We each hold a color in our hand and with broad, bold strokes we turn the white paper in front of us bright.
I look at Mom and smile.
I like you, I say.
Mom grins extra wide and hugs me. A big bear hug.
“I like you, too,” she says.

I fall down. And bump my eye. And bruise my ear.
My eye puffs up until there is just a slim slit I can see through. My ear swells, too, and turns red and purple.
