Mom and Dad and I go to a dog party.
There are big dogs. And little dogs. Hairy dogs. And shaved dogs.
Dogs of all kinds.
Some folks stand up and talk about their dogs.
So I get in line. And wait my turn.
I’m Audrey, I say. And that’s my dog, Nicki.

The clown with the bright hair twists a balloon or two. Then she hands me a dog. On a leash.
It’s Tucker! I squeal.
Now make me Nicki, I say.
And she does.
Soon all of my friends have balloons too. In shapes of dogs and swords and fish.
Fish? I want a fish! So I get in line again.

Our town has a new park. One just for dogs.
Mom and I pack the big dog—the sociable one—in the back of the car. And drive to the new park.
We stop at a very big yard. With a fence all around it.
Mom lets the big dog run all over the yard.
Where’s the park? I ask Mom.
“This [...]

What you like? I ask Mom.
“Chocolate chip cookies,” Mom says.
I whip up a batch in less than a minute. In my new play kitchen.
Here you go, Mom, I say. And hand her some imaginary cookies.
“Yum,” Mom says. And munches air.
What you like? I ask the big dog. Bones?
Coming up, I say.

Dogs can talk, I say to Mom.
“They can? What do they say?” Mom asks.
Woof, woof, I say.
Mom laughs.
Cats can talk, too, I say.
“And what do they say?” Mom asks.
Meow.
No hair balls, Nicki

I see tiny balls of hair and dust in the hall. I turn to the big dog.
That’s not okay, Nicki, I say. I shake my finger at her.
Listen to me, Nicki, I say. That’s not okay!
I run up to Mom. Who is sweeping the hair balls.
Nicki says ’sorry,’ I report.
Camels and pups

A parade comes to town.
“If we go early,” Mom says, “we can meet some camels.”
Camels? I grin. This makes me happy. I did not get to see camels at the zoo the other day. And I was sad then.
But this turns out to be so much better than the zoo.
Two camels are right there in [...]
